The Philippines, a country of 300,000 square kilometers, is located roughly between Taiwan and Malaysian Borneo. About the size of the state of Nevada or Great Britain, the Philippine archipelago comprises 7,107 islands which are grouped into Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Five prominent bodies of water surround the archipelago - the Pacific Ocean, the Philippine Sea, the South China Sea, the Sulu Sea and the Celebes Sea.

The population of about 60 million includes many cultural and racial groups. Filipinos are basically of Malayan descent with Chinese and Spanish ancestries. While Catholicism is the dominant religion in the country with 85 per cent Roman Catholics, there are also a significant number of Protestants (9 per cent) and Moslems (5 per cent). The gross national product of the country is 30 billion dollars annually. Of these, approximately 40 per cent is derived from services, 32 per cent from industry and 28 per cent from agriculture. Top exports are coconut products, sugar, logs and lumber, electrical and electronic products, garments, and lately, manpower.
