The jeepneys - wild "macho machines" now numbering some 45,000 in Metro Manila provide both the folksy color and the frenetic pulse. They are - as one American resident vows - "the very mortar that holds the fractious city together!" Manila's freewheeling traffic scene is probably the most graphic expression of the anarchic spirit of Metro Manila - as well as Filipinos' skill in the art of urban survival. In Mandaluyong, groaning buses and overloaded jeepneys race toward EDSA, the main highway, for another congregation at the crossing. Hard-riding drivers - Manila's macho men struggle vainly to change lanes, interlock, then settle in for the rush-hour snarl. A frenzied hodgepodge of stereo music blares from every open vehicle and reverberates in a new crescendo. Like dancing waiters, the vendors fan out, bearing armloads of newspapers and magazines, feather dusters, peanuts, and speckled quail eggs in narrow plastic tubes. Nimbly they sprint from jeepney, to car, making rackets on their wooden boxes, selling and lighting single cigarettes at 75 centavos a stick, wiping down dusty windshields with a wild-colored dish of cloth, and making ends meet on the all-encompassing highway. "Tulong lang, boss there's a shout for help and a commotion from the back of a crammed provincial bus. An elderly man is helped out the open rear window by fellow passengers and passersby. He descends over the fender, hurries off to the side of the road, quickly relieves himself against the high brick wall. With a grin he turns back to the bus and is helped through the back window - exactly as he had come out. The traffic gives and Manila roars off again.
