On Taft Avenue, the hurly-burly of activities begins on the street among the early evening shadows cast by the railway station rumbling overhead. A hundred jeepneys roar about with stereo music blaring, picking up passengers amid the jumble. Buses belch dark gray fumes among the market vendors, who push cartloads of dry goods, fruit and vegetables, looking for a spot to set up the night market. A huge panel truck with a tarpaulin over the open rear gets business going amid the traffic Four boys working on the back platform loop together bunches of cucumbers, and wave them naughtily at jeepney drivers all around them. When anyone raises a hand, they leap out and deliver fresh cukes with a fresh smile and an enthusiastic "Salamat, boss!"
