Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is named after President Corazon Aquino's senator-husband who was assassinated on the airport tarmac in 1983 (while arriving from exile in the United States). It is located about 11 kilometers from the Manila city center in the southern municipality of Paranaque.

Unless you land during the heavy arrival-hours of mid-afternoon through evening, clearing through immigration and customs can be a breeze. But during peak hours and just outside the arrival are a proper, be prepared for genuine Filipino pandemonium - sheer masses of people and often a confusion of touts and services. Arrange to be collected by your hotel (transport coordinator) or private host, if possible.

To get out of Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport on your own, use the various hotel shuttle services or the several airport taxi services. The airport taxis (located some 25 meters from the arrival exit doors) are exclusively licensed to pick up passengers at NAIA airport. Transport coupons are purchased just before the transfer, so there is no argument with the taxi driver about fares.

It costs about P300 to get to the hotels of Manila's tourist belt. (If you can manage to hail a public cab from the airport's lower Departure Area, the ride to Makati could cost under P30.

Airport tax is P220 for departing passengers.

For NAIA information, call 832-3011 (arrival) or 873-2301 (departure).

The Department of Tourism Airport Hotline is 873-2964 or 832-2301.
