Incidence of theft is probably no higher in Manila than it is in other big cities. But always take extra precautions. Do not leave money or valuables in your hotel room; use the safety deposit box provided. Do not flaunt your jewelry in public. Bring just enough money and avoid walking alone at night especially along the side streets or areas off the tourist track. If you are held up by a mugger, do not resist and give your money; they are only after your money and not your life. Beware of streetwalkers and other prostitutes. When you board a taxi cab off the street, try to note down its plate number so that if the cabbie does anything criminal, you can easily report him to the police. Finally, do not be too trusting of strangers, especially those who are too friendly.
